and intelligence. Focus on human-robot interaction,
visual object recognition, language acquisition,
humanoid robotics.

** Multi-robot systems - Both in simulation and with
real robots, and on several application domains.
Focus until now was on robotic soccer in RoboCup
simulation and middle-size leagues.

Candidates and applications
======================
Candidates must have a solid background in intelligent
robotics, or in a field relevant to the above
mentioned research lines, with a PhD degree and 3 years
of post-doctoral experience in that area. Candidates
should note the general rules of Program "Ciencia 2007"
(http://www.fct.mctes.pt/ciencia2007/). The
salary is ~42500 Euros per year.

In support of their application, candidates must submit:
- Curiculum vitae

Guest Input: I do have a couple of thoughts related to getting a job in the robotics field. First, nearly everyone working in robotics has some level of software development/programming background. Although these are mechanical and electrical devices, the core functionality and real cutting-edge development work is occurring in software. Software has enabled a lot of new robotic applications and will be the primary emphasis as the robotics industry, specifically personal service robotics, grows into the future.

Secondly, I think the best way to get involved in robotics is through volunteer work with local middle and high schools. Many of our employees volunteered with local FIRST (www.usfirst.org) robotics teams before starting with the company. This is a great way to get hands-on experience and inspire students to enter science and engineering fields at the same time. It is definitely a win-win situation for anyone interested in robotics.

Finally, one of the most common issues I run into when recruiting new employees is that they do not send a cover letter that explains his/her interest in robotics. If you truly are passionate about robotics, I want to hear about it. Tell me why you are inspired to enter this field and what you see for the future.

I hope this helps with your webpage. I really appreciate you posting the position. We have had several responses that we generated because of the posting. Thanks,

More Guest Input: I asked James Wellington, a staffing specialist with Aerotek Automotive, to describe some of the job opportunities for robotics engineers. He was kind enough to send the following text:

I have been working with Robotics Engineers for almost a year now. Although I am not as educated in robotics as some of the engineers I interface with are, I communicate with them often. I know that most of the people I work with need to be hard working and dedicated as most of the job opportunities I work on in the robotics industry are 100% travel. The robotic engineers that I work with have seen a lot of the world due to their travel, and I enjoy learning from them about other industries they’ve worked in robotics on.

Most of the Robotics Engineers work in the automobile industry seeing that most positions are based in the Detroit area. I have had the pleasure of touring the headquarters of Fanuc Robotics and seen how some of their day-to-day activities are run. Fanuc has some demonstrations that they have on display as well, which shows you exactly what else they can do. While I have most of my knowledge with Fanuc robots, I am also familiar with ABB, Kawasaki, and Nachi robots. I feel that the more information I can learn about the robotics industry, the easier it will be for me to relate to people who work in the field.
